Microsoft: KB5021233 results in blue screens and 0xc000021a errors

Microsoft has launched an investigation into a problem that could cause Blue Screen of Death crashes (BSOD), which can be caused by 0xc000021a errors. This issue was discovered after Microsoft released the Windows 10 KB5021233 cumulative updates during Patch Tuesday.

Over the weekend, the company advised that some Windows devices could experience an error (0xc000021a), with a blue screen.

The known problem is most likely due to a mismatch in file versions between hidparse.sys.sys and system32/drivers within the Windows folder. This could cause signature validation failure when cleaning occurs.

Only client Windows 10 version versions are affected, ranging from Windows 10 20H2 up to Windows 10 22H2.

Redmond said that the company is already working to fix this issue, but it has not yet revealed when.

Windows 10 System Recoveries

The company offered a temporary fix to the blue screen problem and allowed the systems to restart as normal.

Users will need to transfer the hidparse.sys files from system32 into system32drivers using the Windows Recovery Environment, WinRE. This ensures that signature validation does not fail during cleanup.

These steps will help you to mitigate the issue.

  1. To enter Windows Recovery Environment, you will be required to Please see the Entry points to WinRE if your device is not starting up automatically.
  2. Click the Troubleshoot option.
  3. Click the button “Start Recovery, Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Tools”.
  4. Click the button “Advanced Options”.
  5. Click the “Command Prompt” button to wait for your device’s restart.
  6. The Command Prompt window should appear on your device’s screen. Before you can access the Command Prompt, sign in with your password.
  7. Run the following command (Important: If Windows is not installed to C:windows you will need to modify the command to your environment): xcopy C:windowssystem32drivershidparse.sys C:windowssystem32hidparse.sys
  8. After the command is complete, press exit
  9. Click the button “Continue”.
  10. Windows will now begin as normal.

It is not advised to use any other solution than the ones listed above. Microsoft . We don’t recommend that you delete hidparse.sys.
